A Guide to Savannah City Market during the Coronavirus Outbreak

Updated March 24, 2020 at 12 p.m.

Right now we are all adjusting to life during the Coronavirus outbreak. For many of our shops, this past week has been a balancing exercise on following the guidelines and still serving the public. After careful attention to health officials and local guidance, we have closed Savannah City Market until further notice.  For questions about re-openings or online services, contact the stores directly using the Savannah City Market directory.

Please continue to support our shops via online messages of encouragement, online shopping,  and purchasing gift cards for later use. We hope to see you real soon!

Remember, to practice proper hygiene with the following tips:

  • Wash your hands often
  • Cough into your elbow
  • Don’t touch your face
  • Keep a safe distance from others
  • Stay home if you can

Be healthy. Stay safe. Support local.

Meet the Artist: Lisa Rosenmeir

Art is at the heart of all that we do in Savannah City Market. Providing a central space for artists to create, share, and sell their work is an honor. Keep reading to learn more about our new artist Lisa Rosenmeir. She is located in Studio 104, upstairs in the Art Center (look for the red door).

When did you open in Savannah City Market?

I opened my doors officially on February 8, 2020, with great success. It was a joyous day and my studio was packed for the 6 hours I was open that day.

What made you decide to open in Savannah City Market?

The light, definitely the light. Being a painter, light is very important to me while I work. It keeps my colors true. Plus, the people traveling from other parts of this country and world. This makes me feel right at home having grown up in a military family and moved often. I use to see the world, now the world comes to me.

How would you describe your art?

I often say, “I create in paint the color of life.” My style is a blend of realism and illustration. However, the soul of my work range from the beautiful, detailed views found in everyday life, to more meaningful pieces that can move you emotionally.

Describe the experience people can expect when they visit your studio or purchase your work?

Calm, joy, peace, happiness. Yes, all this can be felt when you walk into my studio. I will be working away on something but that will never keep me from saying, “Hi!’ There are paintings hanging on the walls that, unless marked otherwise, are available for purchase and I have prints too. If you’re just looking, I hope you walk away from my studio with a lighter heart and a smile on your face.

What is your artistic background and inspiration for your work?

I do not have an art degree. One day (my Mother said) I announced, “I could draw better than the weatherman on the news.” (He had drawn a stick figure holding an umbrella). So I got to work drawing. Then when I was 9 years old, my Father took one of my paintings (of a rose) to an artist he knew and asked if it was any good. He said the response he got from the artist was, “Can you paint a rose like that?” As for inspiration, it’s people and life, all life. I paint for you (everyone).

How can people find you online?

I have a website. www.LisaRosenmeier.com where I constantly add things as I make new work. My website is nice, but my studio in City Market is way more interesting! Be bold, be brave, and look at art that moves you.

4 Reasons You Should Try the Beef Jerky Experience

It’s a new year and we have new shops joining us! One of the most recent additions to Savannah City Market is The Beef Jerky Experience. This shop is part of the Beef Jerky Outlet, the nation’s leading premium jerky retailer. Now located in the heart of Savannah at the City Market, the Beef Jerky Experience offers simple, delicious, and local fun. It is a family-owned-and-operated shopping and snacking experience with more flavors and varieties of jerky than you will find anywhere.

Here are 4 reasons you should stop by when you visit Savannah City Market.

1. Sample premium beef jerky. This place is jerky heaven with all kinds of beef jerky from original to blazing hot in more than 100 varieties. The jerky top sellers include prime rib jerky, cherry maple smoked beef, Cajun BBQ smoked beef brisket, Honey BBQ smoked beef, teriyaki beef jerky, honey jalapeno beef jerky, Asian sesame beef jerky, broiled crawfish beef jerky, The Reaper smoked beef, and original smoked beef. The product is the highest-quality USDA-approved jerky you can find. Part of the Beef Jerky Experience is free samples of any of the regular jerky vastly presented on the store walls.

2. Try more than beef. Not only is beef on the menu, but they serve elk, buffalo, venison, wild boar, kangaroo, bison, turkey, duck, ostrich, salmon, and alligator! See if you have what it takes to venture to the wild side. Try the FREE SAMPLES, and your taste buds will guide you through the shop to find your favorite jerky flavor.

3. Buy unique treats. Jerky isn’t the only thing to try and buy. Store specialties include snacks, condiments, sweets, and other extras. Try candies, gourmet popcorn, dried fruit and veggies, espresso beans, canned goods, and a variety of unique hot sauces and rubs. Kids and adults alike can select from a variety of fun treats, including lollipops with a special surprise inside such as a snack of crickets or ants.

4. Learn about the products firsthand. Jerky is lean, high in protein, low in calories, and contains less than 3% fat and an extremely long shelf life. The jerky is made in small batches in the U.S.A., so it is always fresh. The knowledgeable employees happily show you the varieties of jerky conveniently displayed in six different jerky zones throughout the store and give you more detailed information about the different jerky texture and flavors. You will also find the owners, John and Irena Jameson, in the store every day, motivated to make everybody a true jerky fan.

Thanks to the Beef Jerky Experience, Savannah vacationers and locals can snack on a tasty lean-protein snack all day long while exploring the area and Historic Savannah with its beautiful homes, shops, and public squares. Come experience jerky you probably would have never seen before, and we hope you never forget! We look forward to seeing you in Savannah City Market.

Rhen’s Nest Toy Shop Now Open in Savannah City Market!

There is a new kid on the block, and we’re excited to welcome Rhen’s Nest Toy Shop to the Savannah City Market. The Savannah location first opened on September 1, 2019; however, this was right in the middle of Hurricane Dorian. Thankfully, we weathered the storm. Now that things are settled, it’s a good time to learn about this new addition to Savannah from the owners Christina & John Bonaccorse.

What made you decide to open in Savannah City Market?

Savannah holds a special place in our hearts. Over the years, we’ve enjoyed many vacations in Savannah and always left with a warm feeling of being at home. My husband, John, has even worked on a few films in Savannah so we’ve had the chance to stay/live in Savannah for a few months at a time. When we decided to open a second RNTS location (the first Rhen’s Nest opened in Glenwood Park from 2015-2018; a second location opened in Ponce City Market in Atlanta, GA in 2017), Savannah was our first choice. We feel extremely lucky to have found our second home in Savannah City Market and look forward to being here for years to come.

What do you offer to the Savannah area that you think is missing or unique?

Toys! Unique toys that spark imaginative and creative play. “Unplugged play” is our motto so we’re deliberate in selecting toys that encourage children and families to disconnect from electronics. Although, there are retail stores in the area that sell or have a small toy selection, there is no actual toy shop in Savannah. We discovered this on our frequent visits with our daughter, Rhen, and thought it was unfortunate that such a magical town didn’t have its own toy shop. So now we’re here to fill that void and be the go-to destination for visitors and locals alike.

What is it like to experience The Rhen’s Nest Toy Shop?

We want adults to be reminded of their childhood and children to be in awe of what our store has to offer. Nothing makes our hearts melt more than to hear a child walk through our doors exclaiming, “This is the best toy store ever!” I always giggle to myself and think, “Just wait kiddo, you’ve only just stepped in the front door…”

We strive to make everyone feel welcome, we want them to feel like family. One of our goals is for every guest to take home a fond memory of RNTS. Something that they will tell their friends and family members about. We want to be known and remembered as that amazing little toy shop (even if they don’t remember our name) in Savannah, GA.

For more information or to shop online, visit the Rhen’s Nest Toy Shop online at www.rhensnesttoyshop.com, and follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Whenever you’re at Savannah City Market stop by, say hi, and play!

You may carry open drinks as long as they are in a plastic, 16-ounce cup (not bottles, mugs or flasks) and must remain in the Historic District (the area from River Street to Jones Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to West Broad Street). Father’s Day Gift Ideas to Knock Your Dad’s Socks Off

We hear it every year — “Mother’s get all the attention and dad’s get no love.” “Everybody forgets about Father’s Day.” “We go all out for moms and all we get is a pair of socks and a tie.” We hear you dads, so this year we are creating a gift guide that’s all about the fathers. Consider this a Father’s Day gift from Savannah City Market to all of you!

Food: It’s been said that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. If this is the case with your dad, then treat him to some of the best seafood and steaks in town. Belford’s Savannah has weekly specials as well as staple menu items that has earned Belford’s recognition as one of the best restaurants in The Hostess City. But, if you want to keep it simple, head over to Vinnie Van GoGo’s for the best pizza in town (Yes, you can get a beer with that!).

Cigars: When it comes to buying cigars, you don’t want to skip out on quality or selection. You’re in luck because Savannah Cigars offers both quantity and quality. Stop in for cigars, smoking accessories, e-cigarettes, pipes, and more.

Beverages: The Georgia Tasting Room is more than wine. Get locally sourced craft beers, mead, moonshine, and more.

Sweets: What better way to show your dad that you care than a box filled with gourmet sweets? Savannah’s Candy Kitchen has everything from pralines to peanut brittle in tins and towers. Candy-loaded boxes are definitely better than another tie.

Art: No matter what type of art your dad likes, there is something for every style and budget in Savannah City Market. You’ll find everything from abstract art to street art to fine art. Our artists can create something your dad will remember. Take a look at the gallery list or visit the Art Center to find the right one.

Adventure: Imagine how much fun it would be to explore 6,000 square feet filled with galleries, exhibits, vintage cars, a functioning speakeasy, and more dedicated to all things alcohol. Treat your dad to a great time learning about prohibition at The American Prohibition Museum. It’s not your typical dry museum, but if dad would rather skip the learning and get straight to the drinking, head straight to the speakeasy upstairs. You can also purchase tickets to a cocktail class at Congress Street Up where certified bartenders will teach him how to make classic cocktails. Classes are held every Monday at 6:30 p.m. but limited space is available. Buy online and save even more.

When you’re done with City Market fun, keep the party going in our courtyard to enjoy live music and good company. Check out the music schedule then make plans to give your dad something special this Father’s Day.
